A new acquisition...

Evan's been sharing info on Border's troubles with me, so I thought I'd give them a helping hand. I finally got Bruce Caldwell's definitive edition of The Road to Serfdom. A week ago it would have been an odd choice - to the extent that I'm interested in the Austrian School, it's not really about their political theory. But I have a new project, and it involves two of Hayek's projects after his work with business cycle theory: (1.) The Road to Serfdom, and (2.) prices and planning. This will be fun - it might involve some archival work. And it's more constructive than other things I've done with the Austrian school (i.e. - the 1920-21 paper and the Econ Journal Watch take-down). Not sure on what time-table this will unfold, but my spring is looking good - the NBER chapter has been pushed off until September. I have another short piece I hope to finish in maybe the next two weeks, and then I might pick this up. If anybody knows of any good contemporary Keynesian reactions to either The Road to Serfdom or the Socialist Calculation Debate, I'm interested in hearing about them. I'm still reading The Metaphysical Club - I'm not sure if I'll pick up Hayek immediately afterwards - but certainly soon.

  1. The Road to Serfdom is Hayek's premier work on central planning. The only other book I could recommend is Individualism and Economic Order. There are 3 essays in there on Socialist Calculation, as well as important works on competition and social theory.
